Professor Joel MacKay

Joel Mackay trained as a chemist at the University of Auckland and a chemical biologist at The University of Cambridge. During this time, he got hooked on biomolecular NMR spectroscopy. He then moved to Australia in 1994 to postdoc with Glenn King at the University of Sydney after a brief and rather peculiar stint at CSIRO. Over the course of the subsequent twenty plus years, he has succeeded in moving a total of about 20 metres up the corridor to where he runs a laboratory that has as its main focus the molecular mechanisms underlying mammalian gene regulation. The lab uses a wide variety of approaches to try to piece together a picture of the protein interactions that drive this process, but NMR spectroscopy will always be the technique closest to his heart.
